Pre-Space Age Foundation

1945-1960: Early Visionaries India’s space journey begins with Dr. Vikram Sarabhai’s vision for peaceful space applications and Dr. Homi Bhabha’s atomic energy program laying the foundation for space technology.

Global Space Age Begins (1950s-1960s)

1957 – Soviet Union launches Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite, starting the Space Race.

1961 – Yuri Gagarin becomes the first human in space aboard Vostok 1.

1962India enters space age: ISRO was set up in 1962 by the Government of India on the recommendation of scientist Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, initially as the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR).

1963 – India’s first rocket launch occurs at Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station with a Nike-Apache sounding rocket.

1965 – Alexei Leonov conducts the first spacewalk during Voskhod 2.

1969India formalizes space program: ISRO was officially established on August 15, 1969, under the visionary leadership of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, often regarded as the father of the Indian space program.

1969 – Apollo 11 lands on the Moon with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

India Joins Space Powers (1970s-1980s)

1971 – Soviet Union establishes Salyut 1, the first space station.

1975India’s first satellite: Aryabhatta becomes India’s first satellite, launched by the Soviet Union. It carried X-ray astronomy and solar physics experiments.

1979First indigenous launch: India launches Bhaskara-I, its first experimental Earth observation satellite.

1981 – Space Shuttle Columbia completes first shuttle mission.

  • India advances communication: Apple (Ariane Passenger Payload Experiment) satellite launched, demonstrating satellite communication potential for India.

1983Rohini series success: SLV-3 successfully launches Rohini satellites, marking India’s entry into the satellite launch club.

1984First Indian in space: Rakesh Sharma becomes the first Indian citizen in space aboard Soviet Soyuz T-11, spending 8 days on Salyut 7 space station.

1988IRS-1A launch: India launches its first operational remote sensing satellite, beginning the Indian Remote Sensing satellite series.

International Cooperation Era (1990s-2000s)

1990 – Hubble Space Telescope launches.

1993PSLV debut: Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle makes its first successful flight, giving India reliable indigenous launch capability.

1994INSAT-2 series: Advanced communication satellites improve India’s broadcasting and telecommunication infrastructure.

1998 – International Space Station construction begins.

1999IRS-P4 (Oceansat-1): India’s first satellite dedicated to ocean and atmospheric studies.

2001GSLV debut: Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle first flight, enabling India to launch heavier communication satellites.

India’s Deep Space Era (2000s-2010s)

2003 – Space Shuttle Columbia disaster; China launches first crewed mission.

2008Chandrayaan-1: India’s first lunar probe was launched from Sriharikota Island on October 22, 2008, by a PSLV-C11 launch vehicle. It confirmed water molecules on the Moon and completed 3,400 orbits.

2012 – SpaceX Dragon docks with ISS.

2013Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh approved the project on 3 August 2012. Launched in November 2013, Mangalyaan created history by successfully entering Mars orbit on its very first attempt.

2014Historic Mars achievement: India became the first Asian country to reach Mars orbit and the fourth space agency worldwide to do so, after NASA, the Soviet space program, and the European Space Agency. The mission cost only $74 million, making it the most cost-effective Mars mission ever.

Modern Space Renaissance (2010s-Present)

2015 – NASA’s New Horizons flies by Pluto.

2017Record-breaking launch: ISRO creates world record by launching 104 satellites in a single mission using PSLV-C37.

2019Chandrayaan-2: India’s second lunar mission launches with orbiter, lander (Vikram), and rover (Pragyan). While the lander crashed, the orbiter continues successful operations.

2020 – SpaceX Crew Dragon transports astronauts to ISS.

2021 – NASA’s Perseverance rover lands on Mars with Ingenuity helicopter.

2022 – James Webb Space Telescope begins operations.

2023Historic lunar achievement: On 23 August 2023, Chandrayaan-3’s lander Vikram successfully soft landed in the lunar south pole region, achieving humanity’s first soft landing in the region and making India the fourth country to soft land on the Moon after Soviet Union, United States and China.

Current Era (2024-2025)

2024 – Multiple lunar missions from various countries continue.

2025India’s expanding horizons: ISRO has carried out 125 spacecraft missions, 92 launch missions and planned several missions including the Gaganyaan (crewed/robotic) and Interplanetary mission such as Lunar Polar Exploration Mission, Chandrayaan-4, Shukrayaan and Mangalyaan-2.

January 2025 – Dr. V. Narayanan assumed charge as Secretary, Department of Space, Chairman, Space Commission and Chairman ISRO, and ISRO successfully completed spacecraft docking with the SpaDeX mission.

India’s Unique Achievements

Cost-Effective Innovation: India’s Mars mission cost less than the Hollywood movie “Gravity,” demonstrating frugal engineering excellence.

Scientific Contributions: Chandrayaan-1’s discovery of water on the Moon changed lunar science understanding globally.

Commercial Success: India has launched over 400 foreign satellites, making it a preferred launch provider globally.

Upcoming Milestones: Gaganyaan human spaceflight program, Venus mission (Shukrayaan), and advanced lunar exploration missions position India as a major space power.
