Part 2 — Work with Machines and Materials | Kaushal Bodh, Grade 8

Wood and bamboo are natural materials that we can shape into useful things. In this project, you cut these materials as per a design, join the parts together, and turn them into handy or decorative products. This is all about learning basic carpentry.

By doing this project, you will be able to:
  • Learn how to work with wood and bamboo
  • Use basic carpentry tools
  • Build a prototype (first model) based on a design
  • Make useful products from softwood and bamboo

1. Introduction — Wood and Bamboo Around Us

If you look carefully, wood and bamboo are almost everywhere in our lives — wooden doors, fruit carts, school benches, cricket bats, baskets, fences, jewellery, toys, handles of kitchen tools, bookshelves, and even fishermen's boats and oars.

India is famous for its ancient wooden buildings that have lasted for centuries. Examples include the Hidimba Temple in Manali, Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim, and Vishrambaagh Wada in Pune. The Padmanabhapuram Palace in Tamil Nadu is one of Asia's largest wooden palaces — built about 400 years ago and spread over 6.5 acres.

Wood is used as fuel, and also for making houses, tools, weapons, furniture, packaging, artwork, and paper. Craftsmen and carpenters have been shaping wood into beautiful and useful objects for many generations.

Even though many other materials exist today, wood and bamboo are still preferred over concrete and bricks for houses and schools because they keep rooms cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Sports like cricket, badminton, and hockey depend on strong wooden equipment.

Wood as a Renewable Resource

Since new trees can be planted to replace the ones that are cut, wood is a renewable resource. But this is only true if we do not use wood faster than we grow new trees. In some places like the high Himalayas, trees do not grow easily, so once forests are cut, they disappear. Therefore, wood must be used wisely.

IMP Sustainable approach: Ideally, wood should be used only after a tree has completed its natural lifecycle. This is more sustainable than cutting down young trees. This matches Indian tradition — the Atharva Veda says that whatever we dig out from the Earth should regenerate quickly, and that we must not damage our vital habitat and the Earth.

Engineered Wood and Bamboo

Instead of natural wood, we can use substitutes like engineered wood or bamboo. Common examples of engineered wood are plywood and Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF). Engineered wood is usually made from recycled wood, sawdust (fine dust made during wood processing), tiny wood particles, and wood fibre.

Bamboo, on the other hand, is a perennial grass that grows back when cut. India has many species of bamboo, and most of it is grown in the north-eastern part of the country. Bamboo grows almost everywhere in India, except the very hot and cold desert regions of Rajasthan and Ladakh.

IMP Adult supervision is required for this project because you will do hands-on carpentry like shaping, joining, and sanding. Work with a carpentry instructor or a local carpenter to learn proper tool handling and safety.

2. What Will I Be Able To Do?

At the end of the project, you will be able to:

  1. Safely use tools like a hammer and saw to cut, join, and assemble materials.
  2. Design a product and make a prototype.
  3. Build a functional object using basic carpentry hand tools.
  4. Apply finishing techniques to make objects durable and attractive.

3. What Will I Need?

Tools Required

Tri-square, hand saw, wood file, plane, claw hammer, measuring tape, steel ruler, bench vice, brush, clamps, hand drill, and cutter.

Materials Required

Nails, screws, pencil or chalk, wood glue, sandpaper, varnish, softwood and/or bamboo, cardboard, synthetic resin adhesive, and cellophane tape.

4. How Do I Keep Myself and Others Safe?

  • Handling tools: Use all cutting tools carefully. Learn the correct way to hold and use tools. Wear masks and safety goggles to protect your eyes from wood dust.
  • Workplace safety: Keep the workspace clean and free of unnecessary dust and wood cuttings. Return tools to their proper place after use.
  • Internet safety: Ask your teacher for help when using the Internet. Do not upload/download anything without checking, and never share personal information.

5. What Do I Need To Know Before I Start?

Natural wood comes as hardwood and softwood, depending on the type of tree. Different woods are used for different purposes.

As the name suggests, hardwood is hard to work with and needs stronger tools and special techniques. Softwood is easier to cut, shape, and finish, so it is best for beginners. Bamboo is also easy to work with. You can even use plywood or recycled wood from old furniture.

IMP Fingernail Test — To check if wood is soft or hard: press your thumbnail against the wooden surface and pull it along. If it leaves a scratch mark, it is softwood; if not, it is hardwood.

6. Understanding Bamboo or Wooden Products

Any wooden object is usually made of several parts that are assembled (joined) together. So, joints are very important in making wooden or bamboo products. Parts can be joined using special joints, nails, screws, wood glue, or bamboo string (also called twine).

Joining Parts Using Nails and Screws

Nails, screws, nuts, and bolts are called fasteners. Nails are fixed with a hammer, and screws are fixed with screwdrivers. To place a screw tip, you first make a small dent in the wood. Nuts and bolts are fastened through a hole drilled with a hand or power drill.

Joining Moving Parts

Some objects like windows, doors, cupboards, and chests have moving parts. These are joined with hinges. Hinges allow smooth movement so that doors or lids open and close easily, and they add durability so the object lasts long. Different hinges suit different purposes.

7. Making a Product from Wood

Choose suitable wood — for your first product, pick softwood or plywood (you can use scrap wood pieces). Start with something simple yet useful, like a wooden coaster (a small flat piece of wood placed under cups or glasses to protect surfaces from heat or liquid).

You can also make a wall hanging, key chain, key holder, chalk duster, phone stand, nameplate, or a small wooden toy. Whatever you choose, first sketch the object and make a prototype.

8. Making a Bamboo Product

Bamboo is strong, lightweight, eco-friendly, and easily available. Since you have already made a wooden coaster, you can now try creative bamboo products.

Parts of a Bamboo Plant

The most striking part of a bamboo plant is the stem, which grows from the ground as a tender shoot into a tall, woody culm. The culm is a hollow cylinder that tapers towards the top. A bamboo plant has many culms. The stem is covered by a sheath (leaf-like protective structures) and has several nodes.

IMP The culm is the part generally used for making products. It is a hollow cylinder divided by solid nodes. Culms with a smooth texture are used for handicrafts and bamboo utensils.

Steps for Making Bamboo Products

9. Costing — How Much Did You Spend?

To decide the selling price of a product, we must calculate the cost of making it. List all materials and tools used along with their cost. Also think about your labour — the number of hours you spent making the object.

After this, find the price of a similar product in a local market or an online platform, and compare.

10. Basic Repairs Around the School

Like all objects, wooden objects also need maintenance. Common repairs include tightening nuts, nailing loose parts, painting, or sanding worn-out parts. If objects are not maintained on time, their life gets reduced. Use your carpentry skills to repair benches, cupboards, and desks in your school or home.

Example of a repair record: The wooden top of a school bench was loose. Fix: The screws were tightened. Strong? Yes. Improvement needed: Smoothen the edges of the wood by sanding with sandpaper.

11. What Else Can I Do?

You can make a mini orchestra using simple handmade wooden instruments:

  • Ektara — a simple one-stringed instrument used widely across India, easy to make from bamboo, coconut shell, or hollow cylinders.
  • Wooden shaker — filled with seeds or beads.
  • Clapper — made from two pieces of flat wood.
  • Mini drum — using a wooden container and cloth.
  • Bamboo flute — drill small holes in a hollow bamboo piece and blow across the opening.
  • Damaru (hand drum) — two small wooden bowls joined with a string and beads.
  • Chipli / Ghungroo (bells) — attach small bells to a piece of wood.

You can also reuse old wood — turn a broken drawer into a shelf, or use small scraps to make art and gifts. This helps the planet while being fun.

12. Think and Answer — Solutions

Q1. Did you enjoy doing this project?

Yes. This is a personal experience question. A good answer: "Yes, I enjoyed working with my hands, using real carpentry tools, and seeing my sketch turn into an actual wooden or bamboo product. It felt satisfying to build something useful by myself."

Q2. What did you like, and what would you do differently next time?

This is based on your own work. Sample answer: "I liked cutting, sanding, and finishing the product the most. Next time I would measure and mark more carefully before cutting so that my joints fit more accurately, and I would plan the design better to reduce wood wastage."

Q3. Wood has been a part of human civilisation and life. Find out whether it is mentioned in literature and scriptures. Quote the words that talk of wood and provide a translation, if needed.

Yes, wood and trees are respected in Indian scriptures. As mentioned in this chapter, the Atharva Veda expresses gratitude to the Earth. Its message, in simple words, is: "Whatever we dig out from you, O Earth, may it grow back quickly. May we never harm our life-giving home and the Earth." This shows our ancestors valued natural resources like wood and used them sustainably. (You can also look up trees like the Peepal and Banyan, which are considered sacred in many texts.)
