Project 2: Feeding and Caring for Farm Animals

Farm animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and poultry are an important part of our lives. Just like humans, they also need proper care. This project teaches the basic practices of feeding and looking after farm animals.

What you will be able to do in this project:
  • Identify local farm animals
  • Observe their health parameters
  • Estimate their weight to decide feeding needs
  • Prepare green fodder silage and treat dry fodder
  • Design a first-aid box for livestock

1. Understanding Farm Animals

Domestic animals have helped humans for a very long time with transport, food, wool, manure and farm work like ploughing and carrying loads. Poultry birds, cattle, buffaloes, bulls, sheep, yaks, mithun (gayal), pigs and camels are reared by farmers.

Animals kept on a farm together are called livestock. They form a big part of a farmer's wealth and add to their income. Herders who specialise in one type of animal are also common — for example, shepherds (sheep), goatherds (goats), swineherds (pigs) and cowherds (cows).

Besides money, animals respond to love and care and often become part of the family, even giving emotional support. So caring for them is an essential part of a farmer's work. Animals need nutritious food, clean water, proper shelter and vaccination for good health.

Imp Fact — Ancient Bond: Paintings in the Bhimbetka caves (Madhya Pradesh) show decorated bulls, grazing animals and humans riding horses. This tells us that domesticated animals have been our companions for more than 10,000 years.

In Indian culture, gratitude towards livestock is shown through festivals such as Bendur or Pola (Maharashtra), Kanuma (Andhra Pradesh & Telangana) and Khaturva (Uttarakhand).

Animal Husbandry

The management and care of livestock is called animal husbandry. It also includes ethical farming — treating animals with respect, giving them good housing, feed, water, timely medical care and looking after their well-being.

3. How Do I Keep Myself and Others Safe?

Imp Safety Rules (Exam Important):
  • Farm animals can get disturbed by strangers and may become aggressive. Stay calm and avoid sudden movements. Speaking gently and offering feed reduces animal stress.
  • Tie animals and keep a safe distance. Never stand behind a large animal — it may kick if disturbed.
  • Interact with animals only when a teacher, farmer or veterinary professional is present.
  • Internet safety: Ask your teacher before using the internet. Do not upload/download without checking. Never share personal information.

4. What Do I Need to Know Before I Start?

Livestock need proper housing (cleanliness, ventilation, protection from weather and predators), feed (clean water and fodder), healthcare (vaccination and medicine) and a safe environment for healthy growth and good productivity.

Imp Fact — India's Livestock: India ranks number one in the world for its cow and goat population. We are the largest producer of milk and have the highest diversity among cows, with 43 registered native breeds.

A breed means a type of animal within the same kind. For example — Kasargod cattle (Kerala) is a dwarf breed (about 1 m tall) giving quality milk at low cost, while Siri cattle (Sikkim, Darjeeling, Bhutan) have strong legs used as draught animals in mountains. Breeds are chosen based on the work they will do.
Did You Know? Research shows that playing music in cow sheds has a calming effect and increases milk production, because it masks noises like that of farm machinery.

5. Recording the Health of Animals

Understanding primary health parameters is very important. When you visit a doctor, they first do a wellness check-up (temperature, pulse, eyes, digestion). Since animals cannot speak, a responsible farmer must regularly check their body parameters and keep a record.

5.1 Visual Observations of the Animal

Visual observation helps assess health without any medical test. Observe:

5.2 Checking Respiration Rate

Respiration rate is checked by looking at the flank region — the fleshy area on either side of the body, between the rear leg and the last rib.

  • Count how many times the flank rises OR falls in one minute using a stopwatch.
  • Never count both rises and falls — count only one.
Normal Respiration Rates (Imp):
  • Cattle: about 25 to 50 breaths per minute
  • Goat: about 12 to 25 breaths per minute
Did You Know? All animals (farm, pet and wild) are protected in India under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. It protects them from cruelty, unnecessary pain, overwork, torture and abuse.

5.3 Recording Body Temperature (done by a vet)

  • A digital thermometer is used, first set to zero.
  • It is carefully inserted into the rectum so its bulb touches the mucous membrane.
  • Kept in position for one minute.
  • Then removed, cleaned with cotton and antiseptic, and the reading is noted.

Q. How do respiration rate and body temperature relate to animal health? Explain in relation to your own health.

Answer: Both are signs of health. When we are ill (like with fever), our body temperature rises and our breathing may become faster. In the same way, an animal with abnormal temperature or unusually fast/slow breathing is likely unwell. Normal readings show the animal is healthy, so these parameters help detect illness early.

6. Estimating the Weight of Farm Animals

Body weight is an important health indicator. It affects feed requirements, disease treatment, production (milk, eggs, weight gain) and selling price. Small animals (like poultry) can be weighed on a scale, but a scale may not be available for large animals like cattle, camels and horses. So we estimate their weight using body measurements.

Basic Idea:

Weight = Volume × Density

Using this idea, we take body measurements of length and girth to calculate weight.

6.1 Schaeffle's Formula

Length and girth are measured in inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm), weight in kilograms.

1. Body weight of goat = (Length × Girth²) ÷ 600

2. Body weight of cow/buffalo = (Length × Girth²) ÷ 330

  • The dividing factor (600 or 300/330) is a constant.
  • This is an indirect estimation because the animal is not put directly on a scale.
  • It may have a 10 to 15% error due to variation in body measurements.

6.2 Worked Example

Example: A goat has Length = 30 inches and Girth = 30 inches. Find its weight.

Solution: Weight = (Length × Girth²) ÷ 600 = (30 × 30 × 30) ÷ 600 = 27000 ÷ 600 = 45 kg

7. Preparing a Feeding Chart

Like humans, livestock need carbohydrates, protein, fat, minerals and vitamins for growth and productivity. The feed needed depends on the type of digestive system, feeding habits and productivity.

Ruminant vs Non-Ruminant:
  • Ruminants (cow, buffalo, goat, sheep) have four chambers in the stomach and can digest low-quality grass.
  • Non-ruminants (horse, pig, poultry) cannot digest grass well.
  • Cattle and buffalo prefer grass; goats and camels prefer tender leaves from shrubs and weeds.

7.1 Dry Matter (DM) Requirement

Dry Matter (DM) is the non-water part of animal feed. An adult animal needs DM equal to 2–3% of its live body weight every day.

7.2 Feed Calculation — Example of a 32 kg Goat

Let us take a goat weighing 32 kg (= 32000 g):

*Note: Green fodder has about 80% water content, so the amount is increased about 5 times. Otherwise the goat still feels hungry — just like you feel hungry after having only juice or rice.

Feeding tip: Feed should be given 2–3 times daily in equal amounts — for example at dawn, midday and early evening.

8. Feed Formulation — Making Silage

Silage is preserved feed for ruminant animals (cows, goats, sheep). It is made from green fodder to keep it without losing nutrition. The word "silage" comes from "silo", meaning a pit or container with stored food.

Science of Silage (Imp): Silage is like a "pickle of green fodder". It is made by a controlled fermentation in an anaerobic (without oxygen) environment. The sugar in green fodder is turned into lactic acid by "fermentative lactic acid bacteria" which grow without oxygen. Due to bacterial growth, temperature rises during the first 2–8 days, and acidity increases (pH drops to about 4.0–3.8) in 15–20 days.

8.1 Signs of Good Quality Silage (after 2–3 weeks)

  • No fungal or mould growth
  • Golden brown colour
  • Pleasant fruity aroma
  • Free-flowing and non-sticky texture
  • Mildly acidic taste with pH around 4.0–4.5
Warning (Exam Important): If you see white or black mould or a bad smell, throw the silage away — do not feed it. It can cause food poisoning, serious illness and even death of the animal.
Feeding amount: Goat/sheep — 1 to 1.5 kg/day; Cow/buffalo — 10 to 15 kg/day. Always take the farmer's approval before feeding.

9. Feed Formulation — Making Healthy Dry Fodder Mixture

Dry fodder is also essential for livestock. It provides Dry Matter to satisfy appetite, helps the digestive system work better and gives important minerals.

The digestibility of dry fodder can be improved by adding a mineral mixture and jaggery. This is a simple treatment that improves taste and digestibility, especially in harsh summer or dry seasons.

9.1 Steps to Treat Dry Fodder

1Collect chopped dry fodder (5–10 kg) — rice, wheat, jawar, grass straw or legume stubble.
2Add 3% jaggery (300 g for 10 kg) and 1% common salt (100 g for 10 kg) in 5 L water. Add 100 g mineral mixture (optional).
3Spread the fodder and sprinkle the jaggery–salt–mineral mix evenly so it sticks.
4Make a heap, fill in a polythene bag (or press against a wall and cover with a sheet).

After 2–3 hours, the treated feed is ready.

Q. Do you see any advantages of chopping dry or green fodder?

Answer: Yes. Chopping helps the fodder to be pressed tightly (compacted) in a bag, which removes air for silage making. It also reduces wastage, makes feeding easier, and helps the animal chew and digest the fodder better.

10. Preparing Home Remedies for Livestock

Farmers often use home remedies and Ayurvedic medicines to treat common illnesses. For example, ticks and other external parasites (ectoparasites) feed on animal blood and spread diseases. Farmers use local herbs like neem, lantana leaves and turmeric to prevent parasites.

Home Remedy for Indigestion in Cows: Farmers use 10 betel leaves (paan), 20 g ginger, 10 g pepper, 10 g garlic and 50 g rock salt. All are pounded and mixed in lukewarm water. Given every 6 hours for large animals (200 kg and above).

  • Brokpas (Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh) — yak and sheep
  • Raika/Rabari (Rajasthan), Fakirani Jats (Haryana), Maldharis (Gujarat) — camels and sheep
  • Dhangar (Maharashtra), Kurubas (Karnataka) — sheep rearing
These nomadic communities travel with their livestock for food and shelter.

Q. Design a first-aid medical box for livestock.

Answer: A livestock first-aid box can include:

  • Neem leaves / neem oil — to keep away ticks and parasites
  • Turmeric powder (haldi) — natural antiseptic for wounds
  • Rock salt (50 g) — used in indigestion remedy
  • Ginger (20 g), pepper (10 g), garlic (10 g) — for indigestion
  • Cotton, clean cloth and antiseptic — to clean wounds
  • Digital thermometer — to check temperature
Always mention the exact ingredients and correct measures to the animal owner.

11. Think and Answer

1. What were the challenges you faced?

Answer: Common challenges include approaching animals safely without disturbing them, taking accurate body measurements of restless animals, pressing the fodder tightly while making silage, and getting the correct amounts of ingredients for feed and remedies. (Write your own experience too.)

2. What will you do differently next time?

Answer: Next time I would plan better — keep all materials ready, work more calmly around animals, measure ingredients carefully, and take extra help from a farmer or vet to get more accurate results. (Write your own answer too.)

3. In your opinion, do we provide proper care and health treatment to farm animals? Do we have appropriate technologies and infrastructure (veterinary clinics, hospitals) to care for them?

Answer: Care varies from place to place. In many areas farmers give good care through feeding, vaccination and home remedies. However, remote villages often lack nearby veterinary clinics, trained doctors and modern equipment. India has vaccination drives and mobile apps to help, but more clinics, awareness and infrastructure are still needed for complete animal care.

4. How has the role of farm animals changed with changes in human society (e.g., use of farm machinery, reduced animal-based transport)?

Answer: Earlier, animals were mainly used for ploughing, carrying loads and transport. Now, machines like tractors and vehicles have taken over much of this work. So animals are used more for milk, meat, wool, eggs and manure than for labour and transport. Their role has shifted from "working animals" to mainly "producing animals".
