Follow That Dream

Follow That Dream

Chapter 8  |  Kaveri — English Textbook  |  A letter by Irene Chua

About the Text

This chapter is an excerpt from the letter collection "My Daughter, My Friend" by Irene Chua. In this letter dated 19 June 1995, a mother named Mum writes to her teenage daughter Ming, sharing life lessons about chasing your dreams with courage and realism.

⭐ Imp Idea

A dream is only a dream until you act on it. The gap between dreamers and achievers is effort, sacrifice, and 10 years of focused work.

The Letter — Full Text (Simplified)

19 June 1995
Dear Ming,

By all means, follow that dream.

Great men and women become great because they have a dream and they pursue it until it comes true. What makes greatness different from being ordinary is how much effort and sacrifice people put in to realise their dream.

To reach a world-class standard in any field, a person must pursue it singularly and intensively for at least ten years.

It begins with a passion for something, followed by the conviction (belief) that you must realise it. You must honestly count the cost — years of effort, money spent, and personal sacrifice. If the desire is still burning in your heart after all that, then plunge (commit fully)! The field could be sports, science, arts, business, or design.

The road will mostly be uphill. You will be kept going only by the joy of doing what you love. When your energy runs low, the prospect of success will keep you on track.

Look at the Academy Awards — a winner always thanks a whole support network of people. No one wins alone.

For many people, dreams stay as just wishes. They never move beyond wishful thinking. Some trade their dreams for security. Some circumstances like war, poverty, or family responsibilities force them to change paths — like people who wanted to study at Raffles College (now National University of Singapore) but could not due to the Japanese invasion in World War II.

I am not trying to put a wet blanket on your dreams — but you must also consider the years needed to chase them. If after weighing everything, the burning conviction is still there — go ahead and do something about it.

Life itself can change a person's dreams over time. These newer hopes are just as valid. To fulfil them, you must navigate through a maze of hurdles. My own dream of publishing a book took ten years. It was not my dream in youth — but it evolved, and I am excited about it.

So, I wish at least one of your dreams comes true too.

Love, Mum

📝 Critical Reflection

Extract 1 — Questions & Answers

"It starts with a passion for a particular interest, then comes the conviction that it is imperative to realise it..."
Q (i) Complete the analogy: enthusiasm : passion :: belief : _____
Answer:
conviction — Just as "enthusiasm" means the same as "passion", "belief" means the same as "conviction".
Q (ii) A realistic assessment of effort, investment and sacrifice prevents _____?
Answer:
B. an early abandonment of the dream — Knowing the full cost beforehand stops people from quitting midway when reality hits.
Q (iii) The word 'plunge' indicates a _____ (complete/gradual) involvement in a task.
Answer:
complete — "Plunge" means to throw yourself fully into something without hesitation.
Q (iv) 'Doing what you love best' works as intrinsic motivation because _____.
Answer:
...it creates an inner sense of joy and purpose that keeps a person going even without external rewards or recognition. The love for the work itself becomes the fuel.
Q (v) One motivating factor besides 'prospect of success' that keeps a person on track?
Answer:
The support and encouragement of loved ones (family, friends, mentors) can keep a person going when personal energy runs low.

Extract 2 — Questions & Answers

"From my own experience, life itself may change a person's dreams... negotiate a path through a maze of hurdles..."
Q (i) Dreams are not static but rather _____. (evolving/dynamic)
Answer:
Both are acceptable: evolving and dynamic — dreams grow and shift as life experiences change us.
Q (ii) What does 'hopes and aspirations are no less than the original dream' mean?
Answer:
The mother means that newer dreams a person develops over time are just as meaningful and worth pursuing as original childhood dreams.
Q (iii) Identify the phrase indicating a complex and challenging journey.
Answer:
"negotiate a path through a maze of hurdles" — A maze suggests confusion, difficulty, and multiple obstacles blocking the path.
Q (iv) 'People in your dreamscape would be many more' because _____.
Answer:
...as life goes on and dreams grow bigger, more people get involved — collaborators, supporters, mentors, and family members all become part of your journey.
Q (v) What is the tone of the author in this extract?
Answer:
C. optimistic and encouraging — The mother shares challenges honestly but maintains a hopeful and supportive tone throughout.

II. Long Answer Questions

1. What must Ming have written to her mother about?
Answer:
Ming must have written about a dream she wanted to pursue — perhaps something unconventional or risky. She likely sought her mother's advice or approval before fully committing to it.
2. How can one attain an international level of skill? (Two ways)
Answer:
  • Pursue the subject singularly and intensively for at least ten years.
  • Start with genuine passion and back it with strong conviction and commitment, investing time and money consistently.
3. What differentiates mere dreamers from actual achievers?
Answer:
Dreamers only wish without acting. Achievers count the real cost, stay committed despite obstacles, and keep going even when energy runs low. The difference lies in action, sacrifice, and persistence.
4. How does Ming's mother use critical questions and personal anecdotes effectively?
Answer:
She uses rhetorical questions like "Do you know that to reach world-class standard..." to make Ming think deeply. She shares personal anecdotes — like people who couldn't study due to World War II, and her own dream of publishing a book — to make advice feel real, not just theoretical.
5. How does Ming's mother balance encouragement with caution?
Answer:
She strongly encourages Ming ("By all means follow that dream") but also cautions her to count the cost — years of effort, financial sacrifice, and obstacles. She says "I am not going to put a wet blanket on your dreams" — showing support while asking Ming to be prepared and realistic.
6. Is Mum's advice still relevant in contemporary society? Justify.
Answer:
Yes, it is still deeply relevant. Even today, success in any field — technology, sports, arts — requires years of hard work. The "10,000-hour rule" echoes Mum's idea of 10 years of focused work. Financial pressure and family responsibilities still affect dream-chasers worldwide.
7. What 'costs' are you willing or unwilling to invest in your goals?
Sample Answer:
I am willing to invest time, focused effort, and discipline. I am unwilling to sacrifice my health or relationships completely, because a dream achieved at the cost of well-being may not bring true happiness.
